3 Core Values
Listen to Communicate
Mozart gave us this: “The music is not in the notes, but in the silence between.” Pay close attention to what is being said to you, and pay more attention to what is not being said. Study body language and tone of voice. Make eye contact and study facial expressions. The next thought, feeling, or opinion your client shares always comes from a transition, a moment of pause. The practice of active listening will elevate the quality of your communication, make the other person or people feel valued, and help to mitigate personal biases.
Ensure Universal Participation
Everybody has a voice. During your meetings and daily check-ins and client calls make sure that each person contributes something to the conversation. This is not the age of the wallflower. Enforcement of this policy may feel authoritarian to some at the outset, but over time it will feel routine. Team members will look forward to hearing from each other. Unity will grow. Confidence in self and team will blossom.
Define Success in Units of Happiness
Any team can work together to complete a client project. What’s more impactful is measuring the success of the total effort in terms of happiness. Your goal should be to complete the project with an emphasis on providing a positive emotional outcome for everybody involved. The old adage is true: people will forget what was said, but never how you made them feel.
